Location
Central Museum or the Albert Hall lies in the Ram
Niwas Garden. It is a vast and verdant
garden
housing a zoo, a greenhouse, an aviary, a museum
and a sports ground. Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II
built it in 1868 as a relief project for his
famine struck subjects. The zoo has a very
depressing atmosphere as badly nourished bird and
animals have to survive here in their artificial
homes with no sympathy or medical care.
The Albert Hall has been modelled on the Victoria
and Albert Museum in London and is a fine example
of Indo-Saracenic style of architecture. The hall
was named after Albert, the consort of Queen
Victoria’s husband. Albert’s son the Prince of
Wales (later Edward VII) laid the foundation stone
in 1876. It was designed and devised by Colonel
Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob
The Pink City Jaipur has great
cultural and historical wealth. The glorious past
is stored in form of the artifacts in several
museums. The Central Museum or the Albert Hall is
a beautiful building. It has a
rich collection of paintings, carpets, ivory stone
and metal sculptures. It is a mixture of pillars,
arches and courtyards adorned with murals. The
majestic building was constructed under the
guidance of a British army officer, Lt. Swinton
Jacob. Maharaja Ram Singh, Who was the ruler,
wanted this building to be used as town hall but
his succ essor Madho Singh converted the building as
an art museum. There is and interesting display of
rural life of Rajasthan in the museum apart from a
vast collection of metal work, jewelry , textile
and ivory carving. The museum can be visited
between 10.30 am and 4.30 pm.
