ChittorgarhNothing is more synonymous to bravery than the Chittorgarh fort. The magnificent Fort, perched on a hill top has many a legends attached to it. The chapters of history of Chittorgath fort are replete with tales Rajput chivalry. Heroism of Rana Kumbha and the fascinating tale of Maharani Padmini who performed Jauhar are still sung by folk singers. The most thrilling tale is attack by Delhi’s sultan Allaudding Khilji who kelled more than 7000 Rajput soldiers. Another imposing structure is the 37 meter high Victory tower or “Vijay Stambha” which was built by Rana Kumbha to commemorate his victory. Other place of interest are Mira Temple, Kalika Mata Temple and Palaces of Rana Kumbha and Maharani Padmini.

Once the citadel of Rajput rulers, Chittorgarh, today is a wonderful tourist destination that takes you close to many historical sites. The forts and palaces in Chittorgarh are the mute witness of the erstwhile era that was punctuated by many fierce battles.

The history of Chittorgarh takes us back in time to the 14th century. It was in the 1303 AD, Alauddin Khilji attacked Chittorgarh after he was bowled over by the beauty of Rani Padmini, wife of Maharaja Ratan Singh. To win the Rani, he attacked the Chittorgarh Fort, but valiant Rajputs fought fiercely to death and women folk committed jauhar (self-immolation).

Chittorgarh witnessed many fierce battles in its history. Various monuments in Chittorgarh are the silent sentinels of the history. There are many interesting forts and palaces in Chittorgarh that attract tourists from far off places.

Chittorgarh Fort is built on a rocky plateau and is a must visit on a tour to Chittorgarh. The fort was built by the Mauryas in the 7th century and the ascent to the fort is through gateway called pols. The fort offers magnificent view of the surrounding area.

Rana Kumbha Palace is another important site in Chittorgarh. The palace was the site of the last jauhar, when Akbar attacked Chittor. The palace has a Shiva temple and the royal stable inside. Fateh Prakash Palace built by Maharana Fateh Singh in 1920 is another interesting place to visit. The palace has now been converted into the government museum.

The other interesting tourist places in Chittorgarh include Jaya Stambh (Victory Tower), Maha Sati, Gaumukh Reservoir, Padmini's Palace, Kalika Mata Temple, Kirti Stambh and Meera Temple.

Udaipur is the nearest airport, which is about 90 kilometres away. Chittorgarh is well connected by road and rail with other parts of the country.
